I've been motorcycling to work almost every day now since I received my M1 endorsement from the DMV. I've been saving roughly $60 a month since then.. Usually it costs me between $80-$100 a month to fill up my car. Now that I've switched to commuting on a motorcycle, it's about $12-$25 a month. If I can get a garage and convert my bike to electric, that would save even more. :) For the first time ever, I finally braved the I-10, from Santa Monica to downtown Los Angeles (to the LA Convention Center). It's a 14 mile drive one way, at LA freeway speeds (from 0mph in standstill traffic, to 80mph!), so it got hairy at times, but I was pretty comfortable overall on the trip. It was pretty hot, and I'm glad I was constantly moving! If I was in a car, it would take me 15-20 minutes to get downtown, 45 to get back. On a motorcycle, 15 minutes downtown, 15 minutes back.

Technically you have to figure in your lost time (5 minutes to work and 30 minutes back)and add this time to the $60/month. Assuming only 30 minutes per day you are saving 2.5 hours/week (on a 5 day work week). What does this equate to. Say you make $35/hr and at 2.5 hrs /week, you are saving $350/month ( assuming only 4 weeks worked). You must remember to add in you travel time for costing as well. Way to go..... You are saving a minimum $410.00/month by using you motorcycle ($4920/year)

Actually, my morning commute is only 10 minutes by motorcycle, 15-20 by car. ;) 6 miles traveled roundtrip! That's in traffic. If I go at a less busy time and hit all the green lights, 5-10 minutes both ways.

Round the numbers down to 10 minutes saved each way then and you are still saving time. If you have to adjust your schedule to a less busy time, you are either going in earlier or staying later. You are still possibly wasting time or be restricted on hours works. Even if you cut the dollars saved in 1/2 you are still saving a substantial amount per year. Enough to pay for the anniversay gift. WOW what a nice husband you are. Did you not listen to what I said when you married her. Obviously not. Oh well I still think there is hope for you. Remember NO MORE jewellery.

Numbers aside, I'm amazed you biked on an L.A. highway and lived to write about it.
