Volunteering in Laos and Papua New Guinea for the entire decade of the '70s and traveling the globe since then have made me more aware of the urgent unmet basic needs—for food, water, housing, fuel, education, employment, and health care—of the poor and disadvantaged people around the world. Now, free time that comes with retirement has opened another opportunity for me to make a contribution, however small, to meet these basic needs.

The world is replete with examples of individuals and organizations attempting this: Habitat for Humanity, Mother Teresa, Peace Corps volunteers, Doctors Without Borders, Operation Smile, Heifer International, Marie Da Silva, and countless others, giving of themselves, often beyond the glare of the spotlight.

But before embarking on this new journey, I needed to decide in what direction I should head to ensure that, however small my impact, it does benefit the poor. Any resources (expertise, manpower, funding, and time) I might share with the poor should improve their quality of life, be sustainable by them, and serve as a jumping-off point for their continuing development. If this is not the case, I would then have to question whether I was achieving anything worthwhile and enduring under the pretext of "helping the poor".

Max Blastronaut

The company I formed in May of last year has been hard at work on its first game title, Max Blastronaut. It's an action game set in a galaxy not unlike our own, where an invading force is trying to take over planets one by one. The hero, Max Blastronaut, is forced to defend his home by any means necessary; kicking, punching, driving, shooting, and all the other classic elements you might remember from past arcade games. Click the picture to check out the game and company!

Aruna had to work late that night, so we figured we wouldnt have time to go out to a restaurant for dinner (especially if he had some last minute Over Time to do) so i made his favorite foods for dinner at home, which we ate by candle light while using our beautiful wedding china to make it extra special! :)
There aren't many options if you're in the videogame industry in Phoenix. I've nearly exhausted them all... well, really only the biggest one (Rainbow Studios). The last place I worked, 2XL Games, had just shipped their first game, Baja: Edge of Control. It was time to take the next step... founding a game studio! I'm working with a couple of colleagues that I had the pleasure of working with at 2XL, and now we're creating a name for ourselves. Our press release went out today:

Save time

Save money

I've been motorcycling to work almost every day now since I received my M1 endorsement from the DMV. I've been saving roughly $60 a month since then.. Usually it costs me between $80-$100 a month to fill up my car. Now that I've switched to commuting on a motorcycle, it's about $12-$25 a month. If I can get a garage and convert my bike to electric, that would save even more. :) For the first time ever, I finally braved the I-10, from Santa Monica to downtown Los Angeles (to the LA Convention Center). It's a 14 mile drive one way, at LA freeway speeds (from 0mph in standstill traffic, to 80mph!), so it got hairy at times, but I was pretty comfortable overall on the trip. It was pretty hot, and I'm glad I was constantly moving! If I was in a car, it would take me 15-20 minutes to get downtown, 45 to get back. On a motorcycle, 15 minutes downtown, 15 minutes back.

Early in March, I worked on Speed Racer, the movie, which was an abysmal failure at the box office. While the computer generated imagery was top notch, the story and the audience definitely did not connect. I was only on the project for about five weeks, before jumping back onto my regularly scheduled show, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. This film comes out this Friday, so make sure to sit around for the credits to check my name! It's under Digital Domain. At the moment I am creating a presentation for SIGGraph 2008, to be held here in Los Angeles, between August 11th and 15th. This won't be the first SIGGraph I've attended, but it will be the first one where I have a significant role! I'll be speaking on behalf of Digital Domain at their booth, describing the work that we did in creating the dragon emperor, and the computer generated environments and characters in the film. Next up on my plate will be Star Trek, which I should be starting on in the next couple of weeks!

shake, rattle & roll....

at 11:42 am here in LA, we had a nice "moderate" earthquake of 5.8 on the richter scale, which was then downgraded to a 5.4 about 1 hour later.....i was watchin some TV and eatin a banana when the shaking started, but I stayed sitting on the couch cause I thought it would end..but it didnt..it got bigger and more stuff started shaking around so then i ran for the doorway of our apartment and stayed there until it stopped. Nothing got damaged at our place as we have our pictures on our walls hung up with really strong hooks, but my plants hanging from the ceiling got a nice little shake down there for abit :)

I made sure that the type of seeds that i purchased were of a smaller variety so that the large tub we would be using was enough for its root system. Now the first couple a cucumbers that grew were fine, but the next bunch were all mis-shapen, but we didnt care, as they still tasted fine in our salads!
